Mumbai rains: IMD issues alerts in parts of Maharashtra as monsoon arrive early

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for several areas in Maharashtra. The Southwest Monsoon has officially made its way to Kerala earlier than usual. The entry of the monsoon in Kerala a few days early also signifies that parts of Maharashtra and Mumbai region, including the Mumbai region, should expect heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds in the coming days.

With intense pre-monsoon showers already marking their way in the Maharashtra region during the May, IMD has recently issued a warning. The Indian Meteorological Department said that the monsoon has hit Kerala on Saturday, and it is expected to reach Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra very soon.

IMD, while issuing a warning at 10:20 am on May 25, 2025, said that there is a chance of intense spells of rain. Heavy to moderate showers are very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Raigad during the next 3–4 hours. The India Meteorological Department also stated that there is a high possibility of thunderstorms and lightning accompanied with strong winds in some areas. IMD has requested people to take all the necessary precautions while moving out from their home.

Considering that Mumbai experienced an unusual May this year with over 700 per cent of increase in monsoon during the month. The Santacruz station recorded 137 mm of rain, and the Colaba coastal observatory recorded 124 mm of rain during May. The above-average pre-monsoon showers during May resulted in a surplus of 700 per cent of the city`s actual long-term average rainfall for the month. Furthermore, the Mumbai suburban district recorded 677 per cent of the region`s actual long-term average rainfall.

"The depression brought heavy to very heavy rainfall to several regions in Maharashtra. The weather office also alerted coastal districts and warned fishermen against venturing into the sea due to rough conditions," as stated by IMD officials.

Furthermore, IMD also stated that heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds is anticipated in certain areas of Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. On May 25 and 26, Bihar might see winds of 70 mph with unusual May weather.
