Mumbai weather updates: Heavy rains lash Mumbai and suburbs

Mumbai has been experiencing heavy rainfall as the southwest monsoon continues to progress after making an early onset over Kerala.

According to latest Mumbai weather updates, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday morning issued a weather warning for Mumbai, predicting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, intense rainfall spells, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph. These conditions are likely to occur at isolated locations in the city over the next 3 to 4 hours.

According to latest Mumbai weather updates, between 6:00 am and 7:00 am, several areas in Mumbai recorded significant rainfall. Nariman Point Fire Station registered 40 mm, followed by Grant Road Eye Hospital with 36 mm and Memonwada Fire Station with 35 mm. Other notable rainfall measurements included Colaba Fire Station (31 mm), C Ward Office (35 mm), and Byculla Fire Station (21 mm).

As a result of the downpour, waterlogging was reported in multiple areas across the city, affecting vehicular movement and daily life.

Heavy rain lashed Mumbai late on Sunday, prompting the IMD to issue orange and red alerts for several parts of the city and its suburbs. The alerts warned of intense rainfall activity that could impact low-lying areas and infrastructure.

Taking to social media platform X, the IMD wrote, “Light to moderate spell of rainfall is likely to continue over Mumbai and suburban areas during the next 3–4 hours.”

In another update, the department stated, “Orange to red colour warnings for moderate to heavy spells of rainfall with moderate thunderstorms and squally winds (50–60 kmph) have been issued for Mumbai and its suburban areas during the next 3 hours.”

Meanwhile, waterlogging was reported in several parts of Mumbai after heavy rainfall.

Earlier, on May 23, Mumbai had witnessed light showers, with the IMD forecasting generally cloudy skies and the possibility of heavy rain. “The city is likely to experience ‘generally cloudy sky with heavy rain’ today,” the department had noted.

On Sunday afternoon, the IMD had also issued an orange alert for the districts of Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg in Maharashtra, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall. A yellow alert was issued for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and nearby districts.

According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon has officially arrived in Maharashtra and is expected to advance to Mumbai and several other regions within the next three days.

On Sunday, the monsoon further advanced into additional parts of the Arabian Sea, Karnataka, the entire state of Goa, parts of Maharashtra, the northern Bay of Bengal, and parts of the Northeastern states including Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland.

The IMD reported: “The northern limit of the monsoon now passes through Devgad, Belagavi, Haveri, Mandya, Dharmapuri, Chennai, Aizawl, and Kohima.”

It added, “Conditions are favourable for further advance into more parts of the central Arabian Sea, additional regions of Maharashtra including Mumbai, Karnataka including Bengaluru, some areas of Andhra Pradesh, the remaining parts of Tamil Nadu, and more areas of the west-central and northern Bay of Bengal, as well as the Northeastern states over the next three days.”

In Maharashtra, particularly in the coastal Konkan belt and Mumbai, heavy pre-monsoon showers have been observed over the past two days.

The southwest monsoon made landfall in Kerala on Saturday, marking its earliest arrival over the Indian mainland since 2009, when it also arrived on May 23.

Typically, the monsoon reaches Kerala by June 1 and covers the entire country by July 8. It begins to retreat from northwest India around September 17 and fully withdraws by October 15.

In Maharashtra, the monsoon generally arrives around June 7 and reaches Mumbai by approximately June 11.
