Three dead in past 24 hours after rains hit Maharashtra

At least three people were killed and several others were injured in the past 24 hours after rain hit parts of Maharashtra, officials said on Thursday. 

The recent onset of monsoon has impacted various districts across Maharashtra.

The Disaster Management Department of the state, in its data, stated that Maharashtra experienced heavy rainfall and other weather related incidents in the last 24 hours.

As of May 30, a high amount of rainfall was recorded in several districts of Maharashtra, with Dharashiv district receiving 42.2 mm, Beed 24 mm, Jalna 13.9 mm, Solapur 12.1 mm, and Sindhudurg 11.2 mm, it said.

According to the data, the state recorded three and four injuries due various rain-related incidents including a road accident death in Thane, two individuals drowning in Nanded, and four individuals injured in building collapse across the state.

Landslides occurred in the region of Sindhudurg, temporarily impacting the traffic on a national highway. The debris was quickly restored by the Public Works Department (PWD). 

In another incident, fire broke out in the Indo Amines company in Mahad, Raigad district, injuring one worker. The situation was quickie undercontrolled, and the fire was doused.

In Dharashiv district, heavy rains prompted altering transportation routes, no major casualties were recorded.

Anticipating the future monsoon activities the state administration has stationed NDRF teams in key urban and coastal areas like Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, Ratnagiri, Raigad, and other districts. Additionally the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) remains in constant contact with district-level counterparts, ensuring rapid response capabilities.

According to the weather forecast of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) light to moderate rain, with occasional thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds up to 50–60 km/hr will be experienced across multiple districts including Thane, Raigad, Mumbai, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. 

IMD issues weather warnings including risk of lightning strikes, falling trees and temporary power outages due to strong winds, and possible damage to standing crops and fragile structures.

IMD has urged the farmers to complete harvesting of mature crops immediately, store grains and produce safely to avoid water damage, avoid irrigation and pesticide application. Ensure drainage systems are clear to prevent waterlogging. Keep livestock safe indoors during thunderstorms.
