Mumbai: Speeding tempo crushes woman to death on Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road
Family says she always rode safely, tempo knocked her down while overtaking before running her over;

The police have arrested a tempo driver who ran over a woman on Thursday night on the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR), resulting in her death. Chanda Mane, 33, a resident of Jogeshwari, was returning home after work when she was crushed by the speeding tempo driven by Sunil Kumar Bharati, 33.
According to the police, Mane was employed at a firm in BKC and regularly traveled across the city for client meetings. She commuted daily on her two-wheeler. Speaking with mid-day, Mane’s brother Yadnesh said, “We had celebrated her birthday on May 2. She was a very happy person, and now we’ve lost everything in this tragedy.”
Yadnesh added, “My sister always rode her bike safely. On Thursday, she attended a meeting in Powai, which ended around 8.00-8.30 pm. She was returning home when a tempo suddenly tried to overtake her on the JVLR. It hit her bike, and she fell. The tempo ran over her head, and she died on the spot.” According to Yadnesh, he was working the evening shift when he received a call from his friend regarding the accident. “She was rushed to Cooper Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. It was a devastating loss for our family.”
Speaking with mid-day, Senior Inspector Rajiv Chavan of the MIDC police station, said, “We have registered an FIR against the tempo driver under Sections 184 [dangerous driving], 134(a) and 134(b) [pertaining to duties of a driver in case of an accident] of the Motor Vehicles Act and Sections 106(1) [causing death by negligence] and 281 [rash driving/riding] of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The accused, Sunil Kumar Bharati, has been arrested for negligent driving leading to the death of Mane.”
